The average age of the Colorado Rockies pitching staff just took a significant increase. The Rockies signed 49-year old Jamie Moyer to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. That means that in just over 4 weeks, a man will take the field at Talking Stick who has nickels under the cushions of his couch that have been there longer than Rockies young pitching phenom Drew Pomeranz has been alive.
The Colorado Rockies have the look of a division winner with just 154 games to go in the 2011 MLB Season.
he rubber match of the season opening 3-game set with the Diamondbacks suffered just such a fate, leaving the series deadlocked at one game a piece until a makeup is scheduled.
The win closed out a 2-1 series clinch for Colorado, as the Rockies prepare to take on the LA Dodgers in the teams’ 2010 inaugural head-to-head.
Mark my words, these Rockies are ready to explode. And with any luck, Colorado will make the remainder of their California road trip memorable. This team is capable of a statement streak, and seems poised to follow Ubaldo’s strong example into the breach.
Catcher Miguel Olivo has thrown out would-be base-stealers at a reasonable rate, and is the one defensive jewel for the Rockies so far in the young season. In order to achieve the lofty aspirations expected by this team and their fans, the Rox will need to follow Olivo’s example and sharpen their game with the glove.
It’s a good time to be a Colorado sports fan – Saturday, Ubaldo Jimenez mowed down the Braves with the first no-hitter in Rockies history. Then on Sunday, the Sharks peppered the “Ninja Yeti” Craig Anderson with 51 shots, and Andy stopped each of them on his way to a 1-0 overtime shutout in Game Three of the first round playoff series.
Control was an issue all the way through the 6th inning, but from the 7th on he had firm control of the game. Ubaldo finishes with 7 SO and 6 BB. A no-no with 6 BB is impressive. Even more impressive was the fact that this wasn’t the San Diego Padres. This was the Atlanta Braves. By the end of the season Atlanta team will be a top-ten hitting team. U-Ball crushed a good team today.
On a night when the Rockies were recovering from two of the most dreadful performances this team has seen in a while, Ubaldo Jimenez simply didn’t believe this team was in trouble – even if it meant he had to carry them on his back. And carry them he did Saturday night in Atlanta, striking out 7 on his way to tossing the first no-hitter in Colorado Rockies franchise history.
The Rockies led 4-0 before Milwaukee fought back with tallies in the 5th & 7th. Both teams scored in the 9th Inning to make it a 5-3 final in favor of Colorado.
