That’s O-Mare

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/mar/27/denver-offers-mare-deal/

That’s the best they can do? Olindo-Freaking-Mare? I mean, I know the guy’s a good kicker, but what’s the point in letting a 15-year vet whose legacy is tied to the Denver area hit the road running, and then bring in an 11-year vet who is clearly on the downswing in his career. Seriously? Where is the upgrade here? The fact that he’ll boom a few kickoffs at Invesco for touchbacks? Really? You’ll take that over Jason “Money” Elam?

I’m just not convinced. I was hoping that letting Elam go was an indication that a deal for a new franchise kicker was in the works. The fact that Mare hasn’t even signed, and could possibly choose Seattle over Denver, shows that’s not the case… oy. I don’t even know what else to say.

One of these things is stupid, the other was just an accident.

Jason Elam is no longer a Bronco after 15 years of providing some serious stability in an era where kicking games seem to lack just that. There’s not a lot you can count on in the NFL, so having a guy that is money when it’s time for a clutch field goal is quite valuable. Apparently, the Broncos have no problem assigning a value. I guess the real evaluation of this decision will come when the Broncos find a replacement. Elam clearly wasn’t in it to “win another ring”, because he landed with the Falcons. He was here long enough that his legacy is secure, and should the Hall come calling (anyone think it will?), he’ll go in as a Denver Bronco. It still just smacks of the kind of business decision that looks good on paper but leaves the reality of the human aspect of the game out in the cold. I think we could have given Elam the chance to wind up the last couple years of his career here in Denver. But in any case, I wish him the best and hope that Atlanta and its messed-up franchise doesn’t bring him down.

In other Broncos news, Brandon Marshall cut his arm after tripping on a McDonalds bag. The question here is not “why wasn’t he more careful”, or “why is this even news”, or even “how will he recover?”. The question is WHAT THE FREAKING HELL WAS A SUPPOSED ELITE NFL ATHLETE DOING EATING AT MC-FREAKING-DONALDS IN THE FIRST PLACE? Did no one see “Super Size Me”? Is no one worried that our number one receiver was scarfing down a Big Mac instead of something that doesn’t clog your arteries as you swallow? Do the Broncos even employ a strength and conditioning coach? For the love of God, even a nutritionist? ARGH!

That wraps up news in Broncos-land for today. Pardon me while I recover from my rage-induced (but certainly not diet-induced) coronary.

Another Jedi Lost to the Dark Side

Posted at 3:39 pm on March 5, 2008 by Ian Cerveny

Javon Walker signed a six year deal with the Oakland Raiders today. I was surprised to find that I didn’t despise him immediately… no… it took a full three minutes before I began cursing his family name and sticking pins in the knee of a voodoo doll painted with a number 84. He seemed like such a great draft-day deal when we picked him up as a compliment to the Cutler draft pick. I was honestly excited about the prospect of a man of his talents playing for the Broncos. Then came the Darrent Williams tragedy, then the knee injury that kept him out most of last season, then came the jealousy over the far superior Brandon Marshall’s elevation to #1 receiver. Disappointing to say the least. Not that I mind the Raiders picking up our aging used-to-be talents and giving them long-term contracts, but I kinda liked Javon. He seemed like a good guy. Ah well… where’s Glenn Martinez? Can somebody let him know he just made the opening day roster by default?

Divisional Playoffs and the Sad Truth About LT

Posted at 9:36 am on January 14, 2008 by Ian Cerveny

Somebody once asked me, “Ian, what’s your favorite offseason activity, ya know, once the Broncos have eliminated themselves from playoff contention?”

I tell you, there is nothing more inspiring after a long, bitter Broncos season than talking smack about the San Diego Chargers. It become difficult when they continue to win games, out-chumping the defending World Champion Chumps, the Indianapolis Colts. (Why Peyton Manning continued to call for the deep ball all game when it was such a consistently resounding failure I will never understand.) But then I remember; the two players whom I most despise, the greatest chumps in all of professional football, were on the sideline alternately sulking and screaming at line judges during the crucial fourth quarter of the game.

I am of course referring to King Chump Philip Rivers, whose backup Billy Volek looked more collected during the deciding fourth quarter drive than Sidewinder Phil has ever looked in the pocket, and Queen Chump Ladanian Tomlinson, who gained 28 yards on seven carries before becoming the sorriest looking bench warmer I’ve ever seen. The “perennial pro-bowler” who perennially gets more votes than harder working, more deserving backs (cough, cough… Fred Taylor) hasn’t gotten much done in big games, much less crucial moments in big games, all season/post-season long. Meanwhile, his backup Michael Turner gained 71 yards on 17 carries, taking better advantage of the very impressive (and surprisingly chump-free) Chargers offensive line than Ladanian has all year long. Let’s hope the national media doesn’t let these two playoff victories for the Chargers go to their heads, because the first time I hear somebody call Norv Turner a genius I’m going to throw a fit. Beating two teams (Titans and Colts) who did more to beat themselves, from play calling to poor execution, does not make a coach a genius. It just makes him very, very lucky. Let’s see how Norv and his band of rampaging chumps do against a team that is well-coached and executes with precision and grace before making any overly complimentary judgements.

In other news the Dallas Cowboys proved that any NFC team can beat any other NFC team so long as there is a general understanding that said NFC team will lose miserably on Super Bowl Sunday. And Brett Favre proved that not only can a good coach teach an old dog new tricks, but also that truly spectacular old dogs can pull new tricks out of thin air and execute them to perfection in crunch time during the NFL playoffs. (That play where he broke free from the would-be sack, tripped over a lineman’s leg, stumbled out into the flat, and underhanded the ball softly into the chest of a receiver for a first down just as he was being finally taken to the ground brought a tear to my eye. I mean, seriously, I love that man. He’s the consummate competitor. John Elway’s cosmic little brother. Really fantastic football player. Just can’t say enough about a player like that except that we’re lucky to be able to watch him play for as long as he continues to grace the field with his presence.) And so ends the best week of football in the whole of the season; the Divisional Playoff Round.

it was the pats’ year anyway.

Posted at 12:25 pm on December 31, 2007 by Jason Ackerman

well, the season mercifully came to a close yesterday, with the broncos plummeting a good 6-8 slots in the draft by pulling out that win. i didn’t get to see it, being in the northwest where you can’t see them.

in related news that sucks, javon says the broncos ‘aren’t for him’, whatever the frick that means.

this is where shanny’s philosophy backfires… you have a bad season like this, and all the high-profile free agents you bank on to keep you competitive without rebuilding no longer want to play here. this team will be forced into rebuilding… and that isn’t a bad thing, what with an offense that is essentially rebuilt already, minus the o-line. the defense needs blown up and redone anyhow. start with moss/crowder/williams/dumervil/bailey (maybe bly? the dude was supposed to be awesome, but he tackles like a girl. and lynch is done, unfortunately), and blow up the rest.

whether shanny stays or goes will be determined by this next season. thankfully for him, the expectations will not be nearly as high, but another substandard season, and we’ll see what ‘coach for life’ really means in this league.

in the final blow for broncs fans this year, a denver broncos icon is hanging it up for good.

The Colorado Snubs Continue on into Football

Posted at 5:36 pm on December 18, 2007 by Daniel Olson

How the hell is Kyle Vanden Bosch a pro-bowler and Elvis Dumervil not?  Does this make sense in any type of reality associated with this season of football?  Let me run it down for you: (more…)

sound the bell

Posted at 10:51 am on December 15, 2007 by Jason Ackerman

bang the drum slowly.

the bell tolls for– oh, forget it.

this season is done. one may argue it was done before it started… but what you saw thursday night is the REAL denver broncos. it’s a testament to just how bad KC really is.

stuff’s gotta change, my friends. i’m not quite ready to call for shanny’s head– but if he doesn’t show he can change with an ever-changing league this off-season, then next season might be the one that drives the nail in this coach-for-life’s coffin.

and with that, i’m leaving for the holidays. working in the mountains today and tomorrow, then leaving wednesday for the pacific NW, won’t be back until january 10. by then, the regular season will be mercifully over and we will be dangerously close to starting to talk spring training.

Playoffs?

Posted at 4:11 pm on December 10, 2007 by Ian Cerveny

They aren’t out of the question. We’ve got a shot at the wild card if the Bills beat the Browns and then lose to either the Giants and the Eagles. In addition, of course, the Browns would have to follow that loss with a loss to either Cincy (possible) or San Francisco (not as possible.) And then the Titans have to lose one game among their remaining games at KC, vs the Jets, or at the Colts.) We’ve got the head-to-head tiebreaker vs both the Bills and the Titans, and if the Bills lose to the Bills or Cincy we’ll have a better AFC record than them…. this of course assuming that the Broncos can win out at Houston, at San Diego, and vs Minnesota. If we play like we did against KC I can see it happening. Houston will be a nice warm up against a real team (after the way KC played on Sunday) that should have us prepared to face a beaten up San Diego team the next week. Which reminds me… we could still win this division if San Diego loses to the Lions next Sunday… a likely scenario considering how hard the Lions played in their loss to the Cowboys at home… or at Oakland the last game of the year… not out of the question either… in addition to Denver, once again, winning out. I know, it’s convoluted and more than iffy, but we are still “in it” for what it’s worth.

well that was nice.

It was good to see the Broncs whoop up on somebody. But before you get your undies in a wad, remember that these were Herm Edwards’ Chiefs. This wasn’t exactly an old-school Elway v. Schottenheimer matchup.

That being said, how nice was it to see the team running on all cylinders?

Now if they can choke just enough to land a decent draft pick…
