On his 1-year anniversary with the Colorado Rockies, manager Jim Tracy recorded his 100th win as head honcho. To little fanfare (perhaps because the win was sandwiched between two losses to the hated Dodgers), Jim touched on an important landmark in his career with Colorado.
So certain is this information that it’s in the Farmer’s Almanac. Migrating birds are called from 600 miles away by the faint ringing of late-inning crowd noise emanating from Coors Field on warm nights in late May. The Mayans even predicted the last five years of Rockies history in their little known Calendario de Béisbol, accurate to within 5 games on a 162 game season.
Rockies catcher Miguel Olivo took the first pitch of the 10th Inning deep into the left field bleachers for a huge walk-off 4-3 win on Wednesday afternoon. Olivo was 5 for 5 in the game, and turned a hanging curve ball into a no-doubter for the win.
This is the fourth time in three years that the Phillies have been charged with sign-stealing. In 2007 the Mets accused the Phillies of setting up a center-field camera to steal signs. The Boston Red Sox made the same complaint in 2008. The Mets leveled another complaint against the Phillies after a May 2nd game this year. (Philadelphia was not caught stealing signs in 2009. A major victory for the team and the city.)
The win closed out a 2-1 series clinch for Colorado, as the Rockies prepare to take on the LA Dodgers in the teams’ 2010 inaugural head-to-head.
Mark my words, these Rockies are ready to explode. And with any luck, Colorado will make the remainder of their California road trip memorable. This team is capable of a statement streak, and seems poised to follow Ubaldo’s strong example into the breach.
Bear in mind, of course, that this would not have happened in 2009. The ot-nine Nuggets would have simply overwhelmed the Jazz with the same barrage of offensive firepower that defeated New Orleans & Dallas. But without the commanding influence of one George Matthew Karl manually balancing Denver’s speeding keel, they routinely fell out of rhythm on both ends of the court.
Both the Giants and the Rockies did ok, not great. The Giants got the hits with people on base while the Rockies couldn’t find the ball with people on base. Cook had one unlucky inning and one bad inning, and that was enough for the loss. Enough for Zito to work with.
The blame can be placed squarely on the shoulders of head coach Adrian Dantley, who was overmatched all series in the presence of Jerry Sloan’s masterful in-game coaching. The Denver Nuggets went out with a whimper in 2010, and the team will have a long offseason to consider what changes need to be made to improve in 2011.
Down three games to one in the opening round of the 2010 NBA Playoffs, Denver needed a big victory on Wednesday night. More than that, they needed a big outing from absent star Chauncey Billups. The Nuggets got both in Game 5 at Pepsi Center, part of their 116-102 win.
