Former Chargers great Junior Seau was found dead in his home this morning, victim of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Seau, who also played for the Dolphins and Patriots in his illustrious career, was one of the Broncos’ fiercest opponents.
Things were looking up for the Rockies after a solid series against the Brewers, but thanks to an uncharacteristic bullpen meltdown, the Rockies dropped a series to Clint Hurdle’s Pittsburgh Pirates. The series brought the Rockies to 3-3 for the road trip, as they now head back home for a set against the NY Mets.
Leave it to David Beckham and the reigning MLS Cup Champion LA Galaxy to draw the second largest crowd in the history of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, which has been home to the Colorado Rapids since the park’s opening in 2007. The Rapids dominated play most of the night, but an own-goal by Marvell Wynne off a set-piece and a goal by Landon Donovan 18 minutes later were enough for the Galaxy to overcome their deficiencies in front of a frenzied standing-room only crowd of 19, 152.
The Rockies season started pretty rough, we all know that. A 4-5 start in the first 9 games, marked by inconsistent pitching and sloppy defense, left the fans feeling like a long, cold summer was ahead. But after a couple series showing significant improvement, it seems as if the 2012 version of the Rockies squad is starting to settle in and is looking increasingly more comfortable in its own skin.
The Denver Broncos 2012 schedule has been released, and features a fair amount of national primetime coverage, as well as some marquee quarterback matchups.
In what is likely to be a preview of how most Rockies wins will come about this year, Todd Helton stepped up twice this weekend, leading the Rockies to dramatic, if rain-soaked, victories against division rival Arizona Diamondbacks.
t’s not hard for the sheen to wear off the new baseball season quickly. Conventional wisdom is to not judge a baseball team on short stretches, but to look at 10-game segments. At this point, there’s not a lot of evidence to offer that the Rockies next 4 will go any differently than the first six. With suspect pitching, atrocious defense, and an inconsistent offense, it’s becoming clear that the revamped, new-look 2012 Rockies aren’t all that much different than the 2011 version: inconsistent and frustrating.
Opening Day is the most optimistic of all days of the year. It’s a time to take the pessimism that you spend years cultivating and put it aside, to take the detailed analysis and statistics and put them all on the shelf and revel in the equality of every team being 0-0. That feeling only lasts until you lose your first game, of course – and for the Rockies, it lasted precisely two days.
One thing is certain – the Rockies need big time production out of their outfield this year, as another year of inconsistent hitting will not only keep the team out of the pennant race, but shine the light on some big dollars that are now being spent on outfielders on this year’s edition of the Colorado Rockies.
Under pressure from coaches and fans alike, the owners voted today to adopt the playoff overtime system for the regular season as well, making the rule consistent, and ending the long-standing sudden death system that NFL has held onto, even as college adopted a matching-possession system years ago.
