Bode Miller quiets critics with Downhill Bronze

Bode Miller is NOT who you thought he were. After an atrocious showing at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Miller was written off as a booze-fiend in Olympian’s clothing. Now all Bode wants to do is focus on competing well in what will likely be the 32-year-old’s final Olympic Games.

US media harangued the downhill skier for partying Turin away instead of focusing on performing at the highest level possible.  Bob Costas posited at the time that the media-unfriendly Miller would finally get what he wanted: to be forgotten by the American media machine.

After a cool, focused final run landed Miller the Bronze in the treacherous Men’s Downhill, it will be difficult to level such criticisms against him in the future.

Miller made his run early in the morning with almost no sunlight on some parts of the notoriously difficult and dangerous track.  After finishing .09 & .02 seconds behind Gold & Silver respectively, many have argued that Miller could have landed Gold with a later start… even some folks in the mainstream American media.

But you won’t hear Bode complain; he’s a family man now.  He’s got a young daughter, though under non-traditional circumstances, and he’s back at the top of his game with a lot of skiing left in the 2010 Winter Olympics.  That begins today, as Bode competes in the Men’s Super-G, and continues over the weekend with the Men’s Super Combined.

See the Alpine Schedule here, but look out for spoilers as the event will not be televised until this evening.
