Colorado Avalanche vs Atlanta Thrashers (2-10-10 7pm)
Wed, Feb 10th Colorado Avalanche vs Atlanta Thrashers (7:00 MST)
The Atlanta Thrashers traded their best player, Ilya Kovalchuck, less than a week ago, and immediately lost three straight games. Kovalchuck was the heart of this team’s offense, and their defense is atrocious. So, despite a hot start to the season, the Thrashers are now doomed to continue their losing trend (17 of their last 24 games are big, fat L’s) into the offseason.
The Colorado Avalanche, on the other hand, just beat the snot out of two bad teams. A third bad team should provide little resistance to the Avs’ push back to the top of the Division. The Vancouver Canucks lost 1-3 at Tampa Bay last night, and they’re off tonight. With a third consecutive W, the Avalanche will move ½ game up on the ‘Nucks in the Northwest.
PREDICTION: AVALANCHE 4, THRASHERS 1
In news around the NHL… and this is something I rarely report on… the Washington Capitals have won 14 straight games. The New Jersey Devils were the beneficiaries of the Kovalchuck trade, and they’ll need him to be huge to bolster their so-so offense. Martin Brodeur and the Devils’ D can stop almost anybody. But Alex Ovechkin has his Caps flat-out steamrolling the competition right now. There are now only 2.5 teams in the East (the half-team being the ’09 Cup Champ ‘Guins), and everybody else is just pretending.
