I think the general lack of funding throughout the league has made it a tighter, more competitive league. The NHL simply isn't very profitable anymore, and a single player doesn't make that much of a difference. The last two big-time overpayment contracts in the league were Dustin Penner (Edmonton) and Marian Hossa (Red Wings). Now the Oilers have a single great scorer on a team that can't score, and Hossa is a role-player with the Blackhawks.

S'far as the Avs go, you're probably right. We killed the Flames' spirit, and now they're doomed to playoff purgatory with the Red Wings. The 'Nucks still look dangerous to me, but we'll be fine so long as we play well at home from here on out.

I don't know if it speaks to the competitiveness of the league or the mediocrity of the league but point taken, two bad weeks is all that separates us from another warm spring.

Also, the Avs actually look fairly solid as a division winner to me. The Oilers are out, the Wild are living in a dream world, the Flames are/have fizzled, and the Canucks will suprise me if they finish this road trip with anything more than 11 points out of 28 (Thank you league scheduler, though I'd be pissed if I were a 'Nucks fan). Any move the Aves make must be made with Playoff winning in mind rather than just surviving to the Playoffs.
