Joe Sakic is a finalist for the Lady Byng Award.
Honestly. I know it’s a tradition. And I know it’s a skill + sportsmanship = Lady Byng type equation. But give me a break. Do the hockey players really covet this trophy? You think Sakic has a room set up just for his Lady Byng Awards? You think there’s a professional hockey player that is just dying to have any trophy with the word “Lady” on it?
That being said, once you get past the idea of the trophy and the ridiculous, though certainly historically important name of it, make no mistake about it… Joe Sakic is one of the classiest professional athletes this town ever has or likely ever will see. You’ll never find him coming off of a positive marijuana test. You’ll never see him caught up in a shooting. You’ll never hear about him getting arrested. The guy simply does his job. And that is exactly why I would wager that Joe Sakic doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the Lady Byng Trophy… the guys that deserve it are too dang humble to covet the recognition. What the dude wants is to bring another Stanley Cup to Denver. Here’s hoping he gets a chance before his body finally decides enough is enough.
